He´s Gone....

Because of popular demand, I am going to re-run this article until Friday, which is the end of the week for me. Have a good week, bye.

By Kerwin De Matas

It has happened, Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte, once a very notorious dictator in Chilean history, has kicked the bucket on the 10 of December, 2006. Now I only know the history as it was told, or as I read it, so for me to really put in my two cents would not be a very good idea. But what I would comment upon, is the level of ignorance people can sink to. First a biography in brief to know who we are talking about.

Augusto Pinochet

Ex- General Augusto Pinochet was born on November 25, 1915, in the seaside town of Valparaiso. He was apparently of middle class parentage. His schooling was in the same town, eventually going on to Military school. So he started at an early age. Being a very ardent student, it wasn´t long before he graduated a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry, going on to higher ranks, to University and eventually to an important status in the Chilean Military. Putting everything into perspective now, the guy´s career took off beautifully, becoming a General any soldier would want to serve under... So then what happened... what started this saga...why would he throw away all the trust he worked so hard to gain...Salvador Allende. Deceased during office, Mr Allende was an opponent that most people didn´t want as President, even the great U.S. of A, was opposed to him.

Salvador Allende

Maybe because of his heavy leanings to communism? Most would say it was a grand factor. But was it really necessary staging a very violent coup, ending with the death of many people during and after the coup? What happened to President Allende? It was said that he committed suicide in the Presidential Palace, while it was bombarded by Pinochet´s troops.

Bombarding Of The Presidential Palace

Some of Ex-President Allende´s close followers insist though, he died a Matyr´s death at the hands of Pinochet´s troops...who knows....Pinochet said that he was a patriot, and so he was prepared to do any thing necessary for the benefit of his people and country. Until the very end, he was determined that what he and his government did, was for the benefit for all.....You´re sure right it was for the benefit, but not for all.

Last Time That Allende Was Seen Alive

Yeh, when Mr Pinochet took over the reigns of President of the Republic, instilling his military Government ( Military Junta )he did an over haul of the Chilean economy, and with the help of local and foreign advisers, he actually pulled it off by stabilizing the economic situation in Chile. Where did he go wrong then? Well, first of all by privatizing a lot of the State´s assets ( most of it to close associates ), many Chileans and foreigners alike, became extremely rich during the Ex-General´s sixteen or more years of Presidential power. Anyway, this still wasn´t as bad as what he did also during his rule.

Military Junta

To make sure he did not have too much problems during his dictatorship, he eliminated a lot of people suspected as having ties to the left. How was it done. Some was killed out right, some banished, but then most suffered in a way that was just inhumane. Disappeared. That´s it folks, most of the political or suspected prisoners just disappeared from the face of the earth. What a way to go eh? It´s not known 100% if they died by orders from Pinochet, or were taken care of by certain wayward officers in his outfit.

He´s Out Of It Now...

Alright, let´s summarize this article. What did I mean in the beginning by people sinking to high levels of ignorance? The General in the end was extradited to Chile to face charges of corruption, fraud and human rights violations. He was put under house arrest while he was investigated, interrogated and waiting to be processed for all the charges filed against him. But, nature took it´s course in the form of various ailments due to the stress and of course old age. Now I am not defending no one here, but I found it really sad and stupid that people would actually dance in the streets celebrating his death, and contributing more to the ignorance that was already present. By his dying, he got away from all the charges that was to be put forward to him.

And The Violent Protests Begin

His role in what happened in 1973 is over, doesn´t anyone of those fools get it? Now the justice system can just drag their feet a little bit more, until the rest of the players that was part of Pinochet´s regime, die also. People, if you really want justice, wake up first from your ignorance, educate your self more on what is taking place, and stop the unnecessary violence, it is only making Chile the laughing stock to the people looking on from the outside!! All of this that took place in Chile back then and now, is heavily covered by international media, and it is really embarrassing that most foreigners know more of what is taking place, than most of the people involved in those violent riots. PLEASE, WAKE UP!!
