2007 In Review....

By Kerwin De Matas

2007 is almost to a close, this is where we all take time to think about what we did this year, all the errors we made, and what we want to do now to make it better. There is a rhyme I learnt at school which I try to apply to my daily endeavours. It's not easy, but if I continue to recite it, who knows?

Good, better, best,
never let it rest.
Until the good is better,
and the better, best.

Sounds really corny, but I still use it anyway. Now, what did this year show us, or what did we do to improve it. Not much I suppose.

Fatalities this year was at an all time high, where ever you would have gone especially in the Middle east and Asia with their terrible civil wars, nuclear armaments, and most frightening of all, the suicide bombing attacks. But what I guess is even more worrying, is how scarier it gets when we realize that the violence which for years we ignored as something that the police could handle is now coming right into our own backyards, and even of which sometimes gets out of control for the authorities in supposedly civilized countries; which brings up a most troubling question... What can we define now as a civilized country in these times gone crazy? I mean, the murder rate this year for example in my country, Trinidad and Tobago, was just showing the authorities that look, it is easy for someone to take a life, and that they would just continue doing so because they simply do not care and are not afraid. People reading my blog would say of course, oh, just look how dangerous the Caribbean can be, but they will never admit to the violence in their own backyards, which would only give fuel for even more and sometimes uncontrollable violence. So there you go, the coming years would just get bloodier until we decide to put aside our pride and denounce violence in our societies! Until then, we just have to make the best of things with a hopeful wish that things would get better, or even some positive action on our part to make life better for our selves and the ones we love.

Looking on the bright side though, this year was not all tragic, look at one of the technological breakthroughs for 2007.

Yes, the IPhone! This is/was one of 2007's most wanted item for every cell phone junkie, I mean, the features that this phone carries is just simply extraordinary. With this technological breakthrough, you can use it for example as an Ipod, a GPS system among other things, and get this, with such a large screen for a cell phone, you can even use this gadget in a Wi fi area for free Internet access, now what do you think about that! I for one would love to have this toy, but because it's a little bit too pricey for now, I'll just have to wait( sad face ).

What did the entertainment industry had for this this year to keep us happy? Well, for all the video game buffs, they are all smiling ear to ear with the enhancements of their favorite video games, especially of one of the all time favorites "Grand Theft Auto IV". The movie industry this year was just awesome with all the box office sellers: Spider-Man 3, Shrek the Third and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Then 2007 also had these three movies where most critics all put their thumbs down, but the box office sales said differently when these movies just sky rocketed, with movie goers still looking for entertainment with a thrill, they were: 300, Wild Hogs and Ghost Rider. Let's not forget the music industry. The famous hip hop star Akron, just made news where ever he went this year, from gyrating on stage with very young girls, to simply throwing them off the stage causing serious injury; how many kids does he have now? Maybe I missed something this year, I love music, and I follow when I can, but this year seems to have been void of anything really exceptional happening to really distinguish it as a year for unforgettable break through. The new releases for local and international artists weren't that bad though.

And( drum roll please ), last but not least, I just want to send kudos to two women that really made the news this year. J.K. Rowling and her list of Harry Potter books really ranked high this and every year before, with an imagination to just wonder at. This writer deserves all the success that she is enjoying right now, even though some critics think otherwise, but anyway, everyone to their opinion right? Kudos Mam! What about Britney Spears? I personally sympathize with this young lady, and the road that she was forced upon, yes ladies and gentlemen, forced upon her. If you want to go back to one of my articles, you would see what I am talking about, or try doing open minded research for your selves, but she really had it tough, and I think she needs recognition for the efforts she is putting in on getting her life back in order, both personally and professionally. Britney, kudos to you!

Well this was my observation for 2007, and I will try on bettering myself for 2008, and I just hope you do too, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Naturally.........

By Kerwin De Matas

Readers, here I am after a very long break, sorry.

My topic today will be one that is very controversial, and continues to spark heavy debates on the part of the nayers and the yayers. Now I definitely don't have time to go on shouting wolf or supporting something that obviously creates static on all levels, but what I will say though, is that I am entitled to my opinions what ever they may be. We are talking about Herbalife.... Yes folks, a famous MLM that just continues through the years to cause a big stir. For those of you who are not familiar with MLM's, according to Wikipedia " Multi-level marketing businesses function by enrolling nonsalaried salespeople (also called by MLM companies as Distributors, Independent Business Owners, Franchise Owners, Sales Consultants, Consultants, Independent Agents, etc...) to sell products and meanwhile earn additional sales commissions based on the sales of people enrolled into their down line, an organization of people that includes direct recruits, recruits' recruits and so on. This arrangement is similar to franchise arrangements where royalties are paid from the sales of individual franchise operations to the franchiser as well as to an area or region manager. There can be multiple levels of people receiving royalties from one person's sales." So in other words, money is not made if you do not have a down line, a huge responsibility for the person who has a down line and an investment made in products that you and your down line would need for selling. There are so many versions as to Herbalife's legitimacy, some saying that it is a pyramid, whilst others call it a ponzi scheme, in my opinion, it doesn't fit into the latter at all, but anyway, look it up and draw your own opinions. Recently, Herbalife made history as the only MLM to register on the Wall Street stock exchange, instantly legitimizing themselves on the world market and as a producer of herbal products recommended on helping the human body rejuvenate naturally. Now for the nayers that follow anything to do with this program, I am not a touter, but just giving the info as I get it. Admittedly though, I began selling these products, but had to stop because I had responsibilities, that were far more greater, to undertake. My family and I still continue to use these products, since we are seeing positive results and I guess they do work, because we feel good and we are not experiencing any negative side effects. Therefore to summarize my opinion, I believe the Herbalife products do work. As for the business ethics of the distributors, I think that is where things get complicated for this company, I won't elaborate since that is another story! So, until next time, take care.....
